07/28/03 I know that my last article was about Christians making everything Christian, and how that got on my nerves...that not everything has to do with Jesus...but still, I have to ask. As you may or may not know, Jason Mraz's song, "The Remedy" is a hit on radio stations all over the USA. I really like the song, and apparently I'm not the only one. It has struck a chord, and people are responding to it. I firmly believe that when people respond to something as they are responding to this song, then there is some spiritual basis to the song. For example, Lifehouse's "Hanging By A Moment" was the most-played song of 2001. The lead singer of Lifehouse, Jason Wade, is a Christian, and I'm pretty sure that the song was directed toward God. So, here we have another song that's pretty popular. Let's take a look at the lyrics. THE REMEDY (I WON'T WORRY) I saw fireworks
from the freeway and behind closed eyes I cannot make them go away the remedy is the
experience. It is a dangerous liaison I won't worry my
life away. I heard two men
talking on the radio in a cross fire kind of new reality show the remedy is the
experience. It is a dangerous liaison I won't worry my
life away. When I fall in
love I take my time the remedy is the
experience. It is a dangerous liaison I won't worry my
life away. So, I know you're wondering why I think this is a Christian song. Here's the explanation. I think that perhaps this song could be about salvation, and about the effect that Christ can have on someone's life. First, let's take the chorus. "I won't worry my life away." Whether or not it is intentional, it is based on a Scriptural principle, where we are told not to worry. In Matthew 6, Jesus talks about us not worrying. In verse 34, he says: Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.The chorus alone would make me wonder if perhaps Mr Mraz has had some religion in his background. But let's look at the rest of the song for some subtle clues. Following is some of verse 1. "now something on
the surface it stings Something on the surface (of the earth, maybe?) stings. Scripturally speaking, this could be death. 1 Corinthians 15:55 "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?"Now this "something" makes him nervous. It can be argued that some people would say "What kind of God would inflict death on mankind?" So maybe it is indeed death he is talking about. Next, he says "We will cure this dirty old disease. If you've got the poison I've got the remedy." If we are staying in a Biblical context, he could be saying that we can cure the disease of death. He could be saying to the listener that if they have the poison of sin, then he has the remedy...eternal life through Christ. But does this theory hold up? Let's see what the chorus tells us. "The remedy is the experience." What experience could he be referring to? The experience of rebirth through Christ? The next obvious thing comes when he says "shine the light on all of your friends." Christ said that He was the light of the world. Could this be the light that Jason Mraz is talking about? Probably not. As I was writing this article, I decided to check out Jason Mraz's web site. He talks all about psychic readings and things like that...so my guess is that no, he isn't a Christian. However, looking at his song from a Christian viewpoint, there are several things that ring true. Why is this? I have no idea. But should I get one, I'll be sure to write it down. 12/27/03 A friend of mine named Liz brought it to my attention that this song is about a friend of Jason's that died from cancer. I have to say I feel quite foolish. ©2003 DemonKilla.com, All Rights Reserved. |
