Do I Need to Worry About This Domain Policy Change NoticeIf you’ve received an email from Tucows/OpenSRS about “domain policy change” and updates to how ownership is determined, you’re not alone. Many domain owners are getting these notices, and at first glance they can look confusing or concerning.

Here’s the bottom line:

  • This is not a scam. Tucows/OpenSRS is one of the largest domain registrars in the world, and they are required by ICANN (the global domain regulator) to send these notifications.

  • It’s informational. The notice is simply letting you know that ICANN has updated the rules about who is recognized as the legal “owner” of a domain name.

  • What’s changing:

    • If the “Organization” field is filled in on your domain record, that business or entity is considered the legal domain owner.

    • If that field is blank, the individual listed as the Registrant will be considered the legal domain owner.

    • Your personal or organization details won’t suddenly appear in public Whois searches unless you specifically request that.

Do You Need to Do Anything?

  • If you’re an individual and want the domain to belong to you personally, just make sure the “Organization” field is empty.

  • If you’re running a business and want the domain legally tied to that business, make sure the “Organization” field accurately reflects your company’s name.

  • If you’re unsure, it’s fine to leave things as they are — the domain will continue to function normally.

So in most cases: no action is needed and nothing is “wrong” with your domain. This is simply about how ownership is defined in the records behind the scenes.
