MCP for J2Commerce is a free add-on for MCP for J that lets your AI client run a J2Commerce 6 store. Its 43 tools cover products, prices, stock, orders, customers, coupons, gift vouchers and sales reports, plus an audit that finds the gaps in your tax setup that make a store quietly charge no tax at all. You can ask what sold this month, put a delivery's worth of stock back on the shelf, or mark an order shipped and email the customer, all without opening the admin. Order changes go through J2Commerce's own code, so stock, order history and emails behave exactly as they do when you click the buttons yourself.
Why this exists
A store throws off questions all day. Which orders are still waiting to ship? What's running low? Is that new coupon actually being used? J2Commerce has the answer to every one of them, but its admin is built for working one record at a time, so you end up filtering, sorting and adding things up in your head. This add-on hands the store to your AI client instead. You ask in a sentence, and the answer comes back worked out.
What Claude can do
There are 43 tools, grouped roughly the way you'd reach for them.
| Area | Tools | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Products | 6 | List and search products, read one with every variant, option, image and price, turn an existing article into a product, change prices, SKUs, weights and stock rules, and delete a product cleanly. |
| Advanced prices | 3 | Quantity tiers, customer-group prices and date-limited sale prices, added or changed one row at a time. |
| Stock | 2 | See what's low, out or oversold, and set a count after a stocktake or adjust it for a delivery. |
| Orders | 6 | Find and read orders, change their status, add a private note or one the customer can see, and record a tracking number. |
| Customers | 2 | Every customer with their order history and lifetime value, including guests who never created an account. |
| Coupons | 5 | Create, change and retire coupons, and see how often each one has really been used. |
| Gift vouchers | 3 | Check balances, read the full history of a voucher, and credit or debit one with a reason on record. |
| Store | 7 | Currencies, countries and their states or provinces, geozones, manufacturers, product options, and your shipping and payment methods. |
| Reports | 2 | Sales for any date range, broken down by day, week or month, and your best sellers. |
| Diagnostics | 7 | Store overview, a health check, the tax audit, reading and changing store settings, and a read-only look at J2Commerce's own tables. |
Installing it
You'll need Joomla 6, PHP 8.2 or later, MCP for J, and J2Commerce 6. The free J2Commerce core is all this needs.
- Open Components โ MCP for Joomla โ Browse MCP Add-Ons and click Install on this add-on. You can also download the ZIP above and install it through System โ Install โ Extensions.
- That's the whole install. The plugin switches itself on, and the tools show up in your AI client the next time it lists them.
This is for J2Commerce 6. If your store still runs J2Store 4, it won't help you yet, because J2Store 4 keeps its data in a completely different set of tables.
Using it
Start with "Give me an overview of my J2Commerce store" and then "Check my store's tax setup". The second one is worth doing even if you think your tax is fine. J2Commerce works tax out through a chain of settings, from the product's tax profile through tax rates and geozones down to the customer's country, and if one link in that chain is missing it charges no tax and gives no warning. The audit walks the whole chain and tells you where it breaks.
After that, ask for what you want in plain language. "Which orders are still processing?", "What were sales last month compared with the month before?" and "Show me everything under five in stock" all work. So do changes. "Mark order 17921803931 as shipped with tracking number 1Z999AA10123456784, and let the customer know" moves the stock, writes the order history and sends the shipping email.
When you change an order's status, you can ask for a dry run first. It tells you which stock will move, whether downloads will be unlocked, and which emails will actually go out. The emails are the part that catches people out, because J2Commerce marks an order as "customer notified" even when it has no email template for that status, and on a fresh install there isn't one for Delivered. The dry run tells you that before you rely on an email that will never be sent.
Permissions and security
The add-on uses the same J2Commerce permissions your admin team already has, checked for the person whose MCP connection makes each request. Someone who can view orders but not edit them can read orders through their AI client and nothing more.
Some things are never handed back. The private key that lets a guest open their order from an email link, the raw data your payment gateway sends back, saved card references and customer IP addresses stay in the database. Gift voucher codes are partly hidden, because whoever has a code can spend it, and a full code is only shown when someone with edit rights asks for it specifically. Payment and shipping credentials are withheld too, including on gateways this add-on has never seen.
A few settings are deliberately read-only. J2Commerce saves tax profiles and geozones by deleting all their rules and writing them back from the form, so a half-finished change through anything other than its own screen can wipe out your tax. The add-on audits them and leaves the editing to the J2Commerce admin.
Why it's free
J2Commerce 6 is a free, GPL-licensed core with paid apps on top: extra payment gateways, live shipping rates, subscriptions and so on. The core has no Pro edition with features locked away, and this add-on works with the core, so it's free for the same reason. If your store relies on one of J2Commerce's paid apps and you'd like tools for it, let me know.
This is version 1.0.0. All 43 tools were tested against J2Commerce 6.6.5 on Joomla 6 before release, including a real checkout on a test store: a product created by the add-on showed up and sold, a coupon created by the add-on came off at checkout, and cancelling and then shipping the order moved the stock both ways. That testing also caught three bugs, which were fixed before release. Products with variants or options, downloadable products, and stores taking orders in more than one currency haven't been tried yet. If your store uses those, start with the overview and the health check, and I'd really like to hear how it goes.
