MCP for J add-on logoMCP for JComments is a free add-on for MCP for J that lets your AI client moderate the comments on your Joomla articles. Its 15 tools read comments with their whole thread, reply, approve or unpublish, delete, and score spam, and every spam flag names the rule that fired so you can see why. The part you may like most is what it doesn't do: JComments' own Publish button emails every subscriber of the article, and these tools send nothing unless you ask them to.

Why this exists

Comment moderation is a daily chore that mostly comes down to two questions: is this spam? and does this need a reply? Answering them one comment at a time in the JComments admin is slow. With this add-on you can ask "Show me today's pending comments and flag the spam", read the reasons, approve the real ones and answer a question or two, all from your AI client.

What Claude can do

There are 15 tools, grouped the way you'd reach for them.

AreaToolsWhat you can do
Reading2List comments newest first, filtered by state, article, author, IP address, date or text, or the replies to one comment, and read one comment with its whole thread, reports and author history.
Replying1Post a reply as your own account, threaded the way JComments threads replies.
Moderation2Approve or unpublish one comment or many, and delete comments with a dry run first.
Spam2Score comments with every rule that fired, and mark spam by unpublishing or deleting it, optionally banning the IP address on JComments' blacklist.
Lists5Commented articles with their pending counts, reader reports, subscriptions, the blacklist and the mail queue. All read-only.
Diagnostics3A health check, JComments' settings, and a read-only look at JComments' own tables.

Installing it

You'll need Joomla 5 or 6, PHP 8.2 or later, MCP for J, and JComments itself, the free exstreme JComments for Joomla 4, 5 and 6. The add-on was built against JComments 5.0.6.

  1. Open Components โ†’ MCP for J โ†’ Browse MCP Add-Ons and click Install on this add-on. You can also download the ZIP above and install it through System โ†’ Install โ†’ Extensions.
  2. That's the whole install. The plugin switches itself on, and the tools show up in your AI client the next time it lists them.

If MCP for J isn't installed, the plugin installs switched off and tells you why, rather than leaving you with tools that go nowhere.

Using it

Start with "Check my JComments setup", then "What comments are waiting for approval?" The spam check looks at links and their domains, known spam phrases, your own JComments censor list, a link in the author's name, throwaway email addresses, repeated or shouted text, the same text posted elsewhere, bursts from one IP address, blacklist hits, new authors, reader reports and poor votes. It never judges a comment by the language it's written in.

Approving, replying, unpublishing, deleting and banning send no email and fire no JComments plugin events by default. If you do want subscribers told, say so, and the tool runs JComments' own notification for that action, exactly as its admin would.

A few things about JComments are worth knowing:

  • A fresh install turns comments on in no category at all. Comments only appear on articles containing {jcomments on} until you pick categories in JComments' settings. The health check tells you.
  • Several JComments permissions work the opposite way to their names. Allowing "comment.captcha", "comment.flood", "comment.length_check" or "comment.terms_of_use" for a group exempts that group from the check.
  • An IP ban never stops a logged-in visitor. JComments checks logged-in users by their account only.
  • On Joomla 6, JComments' admin Blacklist form shows a blank page when you save unless the core plugin "Behaviour - Backward Compatibility 6" is on. The health check spots it, and banning through mark_jcomments_spam works either way.

Permissions and security

The tools only work for a logged-in user who has Access Administration Interface on JComments, and approving or unpublishing also needs JComments' Edit State permission. It's checked for the person whose MCP connection makes the request, so your AI client can't do anything that person couldn't do in the JComments admin.

Replies and deletes go through JComments' own comment table, so threading and JComments' delete mode behave as they do in its admin. A reply that's identical to one already posted under the same comment is refused, so a retry can't post twice. Unsubscribe links and the bodies of queued emails, which carry moderation links, are never shown, and the table viewer is read-only.

Why it's free

JComments is free, so this add-on is free too.

This is version 1.0.0. All 15 tools were driven end to end on Joomla 6.2.0 with PHP 8.3 against JComments 5.0.6, with comments posted through JComments' own front-end form by guests and a registered user, including nested replies and spam, and every change was checked against the database. JComments' tree view, moderator notification emails and Joomla 5 haven't been tried yet. If your site uses them, start with the health check, and I'd like to hear how it goes.
