MCP for JComment is a Pro add-on for MCP for J that lets your AI client moderate the comments on a site running JComment by Joomla! Extensions Store. Its 15 tools read comments with their whole thread, reply, approve or unpublish, delete, and score spam, and every spam flag names the rule that fired so you can see why. JComment's own Publish button emails every subscriber of the item as you click it. These tools send nothing unless you ask them to.
Which JComment is this for?
Two Joomla comment extensions have nearly the same name. This add-on is for JComment (com_jcomment, no "s"), the paid extension from Joomla! Extensions Store. If you run the free JComments, with an "s", you want the free MCP for JComments instead. The two have different tables and settings, so neither add-on works with the other's extension. A site can run both add-ons, and their tool names don't overlap.
Why this exists
Comment moderation is a daily chore that mostly comes down to two questions: is this spam? and does this need a reply? With this add-on you can ask "Show me today's pending comments and flag the spam", read the reasons, approve the real ones and answer a question or two, all from your AI client.
What Claude can do
There are 15 tools, grouped the way you'd reach for them.
| Area | Tools | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Reading | 2 | List comments newest first, filtered by state, item, author, IP address, date or text, or the replies to one comment, and read one comment with its whole thread, reports and author history. |
| Replying | 1 | Post a reply as your own account, threaded the way JComment threads replies. |
| Moderation | 2 | Approve or unpublish one comment or many, and delete comments with a dry run first. |
| Spam | 2 | Score comments with every rule that fired, and mark spam by unpublishing or deleting it, optionally blacklisting the author the way JComment's own Ban button does. |
| Lists | 5 | Commented items with their pending counts, reader reports, subscriptions, the blacklist and the mail queue. All read-only. |
| Diagnostics | 3 | A health check, JComment's settings, and a read-only look at JComment's own tables. |
Installing it
You'll need Joomla 5 or 6, PHP 8.2 or later, MCP for J, and JComment itself, purchased from Joomla! Extensions Store. The add-on doesn't include JComment and does nothing without it. It was built against JComment 2.0.
- Subscribe above, or get this and every other Pro add-on with MCP for J Pro โ All Access.
- Open Components โ MCP for J โ Browse MCP Add-Ons and click Install on this add-on. You can also download the ZIP and install it through System โ Install โ Extensions.
- That's the whole install. The plugin switches itself on, and the tools show up in your AI client the next time it lists them.
If MCP for J isn't installed, the plugin installs switched off and tells you why, rather than leaving you with tools that go nowhere.
Using it
Start with "Check my JComment setup", then "What comments are waiting for approval?" The spam check looks at links and their domains, known spam phrases, your own JComment censor list, a link in the author's name, throwaway email addresses, repeated or shouted text, the same text posted elsewhere, bursts from one IP address, blacklist hits, new authors, reader reports and poor votes. It never judges a comment by the language it's written in.
Approving, replying, unpublishing, deleting and banning send no email by default. If you do want subscribers told, say so, and the tool runs JComment's own notification for that action, for up to 20 comments at a time.
A few things about JComment are worth knowing:
- Reporting is off on a fresh install, although the Settings screen shows it on. Saving Settings once turns it on. The health check tells you.
- A fresh install gives nobody a Reply button. It uses the flat "list" view, and the button only appears in the "tree" view.
- Deleting an item's last comment also deletes every subscription to that item and its attachment folder. The delete tool's dry run tells you when that will happen.
- Deleting a Joomla user can delete other people's replies. With JComment's user plugin on and its delete mode set to "delete", it removes everything the user wrote and every reply beneath it.
- Several permission lists name the groups a check applies to, rather than the groups exempt from it. Captcha, flood protection and the length check all work this way. The settings tool shows each list with group names.
- With Joomla's "From email" or "From name" empty, JComment sends nothing at all, and its mail queue just grows. The health check covers that too.
Permissions and security
Every tool needs Access Administration Interface on JComment for the Joomla account your AI client acts for. Approving or unpublishing also needs Edit State, deleting needs Delete, and banning needs Create. A reply follows JComment's own permission lists, so the account must be allowed to comment and reply, and not be on the blacklist. Your AI client can't do anything that account couldn't do in JComment itself.
Replies and deletes go through JComment's own comment table, so threading and JComment's delete mode behave as they do in its admin. A reply identical to one already posted under the same comment is refused, so a retry can't post twice. Unsubscribe links, the bodies of queued emails and the updater registration email are never shown, and the table viewer is read-only.
What's been exercised, and what hasn't
Worth saying plainly, since you're being asked to pay for it. All 15 tools were driven end to end on Joomla 6.1.4 with PHP 8.4 against JComment 2.0, as a Super User and as a Manager, with comments posted through JComment's own front-end form, and every change was checked in the database. It had a security review before release. Joomla 5 and guest posting haven't been tried yet, and I don't have a live site running JComment to test on. If yours is one, start with the health check, and I'd like to hear how it goes.
